Chris Cardoso is a director of The Sporting Agents & Consultants which is responsible for looking after the welfare of Athletes globally while assisting them to reach their goals, vision and dreams.

“We represent players like SA hard hitting batsman Rassie van der Dussen and young bowling sensational Siyabonga Mahima,” said Cardoso.

“We are also working with clients from the USA and partners in the UK, Australia, Pakistan as well as India.

“The aim is to create opportunities for players to showcase their skills if not locally then hopefully abroad.

“One of the huge opportunities for cricketers is playing club cricket in the UK and that is still one of our main focuses and even though we work quite a lot with mainly professionals, we still get young stars to go that route as it is a fantastic opportunity on its own to make it big in the sport.

“My philosophy is that we keep our clients relationships really close like one big family. As with all of my players there is a great need to establish that weekly communication which is key to building trust and having a long relationship.

“When negotiating for a player’s contract, it is sometimes a very challenging exercise largely because in some instances, certain unions prefer that the player concerned should be present from the start while other unions only want the player to be present towards the latter stages of the negotiations.

“For others you find that they (unions) don’t want the player around the negotiations table at all throughout and rather prefer to conduct negotiations with his agent. However, the player’s communication with his/her representative in constantly ongoing from start to finish so that they are happy and had been kept in the light as to what has been going on at all times.

“My advice to young cricketers that want to be part of the game in the future is to find a structure that will vastly improve their game. Play and be guided by good coaches and if they are good enough they will filter in.”

Benefits that come with an international contract compared to a national one is obviously the international exposure.

With coach Mark Boucher at the helm of the SA Proteas and his technical team in preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be played in October and November 2021 in India and Temba Bavuma appointed as captain, Chris believes that the team could win the tournament.
