Sundowns coach sexual allegations disconcerting

The recent sexual harassment scandal that has emerged from Chloorkop regarding the Mamelodi Sundowns female team against their coach Jerry Tshabalala has sent shockwaves through the South African sports community.

The allegations levelled against Tshabalala are of a serious nature and very disturbing, with claims of lewd remarks and his alleged insistence on entering the dressing room even when the girls are starkers’.

These accusations have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of female athletes in the country, and have sparked a national conversation about the prevalence of sexual harassment in sports.

However, the decision by the Sundowns hierarchy to suspend Tshabalala and hire a reputable firm of attorneys to investigate the allegations is a positive step towards addressing the issue and ensuring that the girls receive the justice they deserve.

It is crucial that the investigation is thorough and transparent, and that those responsible for any misconduct are held accountable for their actions.

The safety and dignity of female athletes should be a top priority for sports organizations, and any form of harassment or abuse should not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Recently the Zimbabwe Football Association were faced with an almost similar situation with the coach of their senior coach who it was alleged, had asked sexual favors from some of the players during the WAFCON tournament in Morocco.

The coach – Shadreck Mlaudzi – later appeared in a local magistrate court after being arrested and charged with sexual assault after he was alleged to have made “unwanted” sexual advances by an assistant of the female national team.

And the Zambian national women coach – Bruce Mwape – has had long standing accusations of sexual harassment levelled against him and accused of “touching a female worker’s breasts,” and this week rumors surfaced that Mwape would be replaced by Swiss coach Nora Hauptle.

It has long been the feeling of many pundits that without discriminating against men, it would make perfect sense for girls to be coached and managed by female coaches like the South African females who are guided by Desiree Ellis.

While it is important not to jump to conclusions, it is clear that gender-based violence and harassment are serious issues that need to be addressed in South Africa.

The prevalence of such behavior in sports is particularly concerning, as athletes are often in positions of power and influence over their young and impressionable players.

It is crucial that sports organizations take a zero-tolerance approach to any form of harassment or abuse, and that athletes feel safe and supported in coming forward with their concerns.

The fact that these allegations have emerged in a country that is already grappling with high rates of gender-based violence is deeply troubling.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world, and incidents of sexual harassment and abuse are shockingly common.

As we await the findings of the investigation into the allegations against Tshabalala, it is important to remember that all individuals are innocent until proven guilty.
